There are various kinds of portraiture. The simplest situation is where one needs a portrait for professional purposes - an actor's headshot, a book jacket, a publicity photo. In the case of formal portraits like that, the technical requirements generally dictate the format and general tone of the outcome.
There is a lot more leeway in an interpretive portrait. One tries to bring out the individuality of the sitter, perhaps with the addition of props or costume, and there is more opportunity to experiment. There is more room for mood, too.
